HOW DOES THIS COMMUNITY WORK?
Borgo Batone is a living community, not a property investment scheme. All shareholders – or ‘careholders’, as they are known within the community – contribute a specific amount to the project. These shares include usage rights in the form of ‘Batoni’, which are redeemed as time spent in the village. All shareholders are also co-creators and contribute to various areas in line with their interests and skills. It is about co-creation through active participation in work camps and other events, and about jointly made strategic decisions. And it is about a long-term investment with emotional and material value.
The community is formally based within Borgo Batone SRL (the Italian equivalent of a German GmbH), has a management team and is organised into circles with distributed leadership. There are numerous working groups that look after all areas of the village and organise events (work camps, community days, assemblies, etc.) where the village is actively developed.
This community works because it is not just about ownership – it is about participation, responsibility and a shared vision.
HOW DO YOU JOIN THIS COMMUNITY?
We have been a growing community since 2021 and, in 2022, we collectively took over the village and got it up and running. In 2026, we are opening our doors to a handful of new members – with the aim of strengthening the international aspect of our community this season. If you enjoy a taste of Tuscan life, responsible community living, an innovative cooperative project and being part of a colourful mix of languages (we work in English, German and Italian), we look forward to getting to know you.
Here’s everything you need to know about our onboarding process:
- Join one of our live information sessions via Zoom. We’ll introduce the project, tell you about our vision, explain how we work and organise ourselves, and give you a first impression of the people behind Borgo Batone.
- If you’re still interested after the introductory call and would like to take the next step, please fill in our profile form and send it to onboarding@borgo-batone.com. We’ll then invite you to an onboarding call with other community members. During this session, we’ll discuss expectations and opportunities, and take the chance to get to know each other better – so we can see together if it’s a good fit for both of us.
- If both sides give a hearty “yes” following the onboarding call, you’ll also have the chance to get a feel for the place by attending one of our OpenBorgo events. You can stay overnight to experience the village, daily life and the people first-hand.
